I've been experimenting (on midnight shifts and in cross-country driving) with various fatigue countermeasures for many years. This stuff beats everything I've tried, hands-down.

Use caffeine sparingly, in measured doses, and at precise times of the day. This gum enables you to do that because it gets maximum effect from the 100mg dose in each piece.

I have tried the "Jolt Gum" that is also mentioned in the article below. What the Army discovered is what I had also discovered; while Jolt tastes somewhat better, you have to chew as many as four pieces of Jolt to get the same effect as one piece of Stay Alert.

Taste-wise, the best variation of the Stay Alert gum is the Cinnamon flavor. It has less after-taste and masks the bitterness of 100 mg of caffeine extremely well.
